Mount Rosa Chapter awards the DAR Medal of Honor to Andy McKean

Littleton , Colorado .  Mount Rosa Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution awarded the DAR Medal of Honor to Andy McKean, Founder of Liberty Day.  The DAR Medal of Honor is the most prestigious honor awarded by the DAR, which is given to an adult man, or woman who is a United States citizen by birth and has shown extraordinary qualities of leadership, trustworthiness, service, and patriotism.  The recipient must have made unusual and lasting contributions to our American Heritage by truly giving of himself or herself to his or her community, state, country, and fellowman.

With recommendations from John Andrews, President of the Senate, State of Colorado, James Nussbaum and Barry Hirschfeld, noted and respected business men from Colorado as well as Mr. Jeffries, Past Vice President General, Sons of the American Revolution , NSDAR Founder’s Medal Award recipient and fellow recipient of the NSDAR Medal of Honor, Mr. McKean was honored at the Colorado State Society, NSDAR State Conference this past April.

Mr. McKean was selected to serve in the Peace Corp and taught science and math.  He has also been a coach.  He is a member of Lions Clubs and has been named Lion of the month and Lion of the year.  He has received International President’s Award (Lions Club) and a National Service Award for the Washington Times Foundation. He also served in the Littleton Breakfast Optimist Club.  The President of the Senate of the State of Colorado has given high praise to Mr. McKean for his efforts to promote the passage of legislation with requires civics class for high school graduation in Colorado.

As the Founder of Liberty Day, Mr. McKean spends his days and evenings promoting the education of American liberties.  His very life in promoting Liberty Day is service of the most devoted and patriotic kind.  Liberty Day started as an idea with members of the Youth Service Committee of the Lions Club of Denver.  They understood that many American history textbooks appeared without the Declaration of Independence or the U.S. Constitution printed in the back as it took up too much room in the book.  With private donations, they printed a pocket-sized booklet containing only the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, for free distribution.  This effort grew from there.  Teachers wanted a special day to educate their students, school officials, church groups, parents, troop leaders wanted speakers to discuss American History and various American liberty events.  Libertyday.org was founded and continues to go.

Mr. McKean states “many Americans lack a basic understanding of America 's fundamental liberties and the role our founding documents play in maintaining those liberties.  Liberty Day volunteers are making sure that the basic liberties ensured by America 's founding documents are not forgotten.”   Liberty Day is a non-partisan grassroots celebration of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution For more information on Liberty Day – see www.libertyday.org

The National Society of the DAR was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and support better education for our nation's children.
