Fort Sedgwick Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Julesburg, Colorado
Fort Sedgwick Chapter History: Interest in forming a new chapter of DAR in Sedgwick County, Colorado, began when several members of Sedgwick County Genealogical Society (SCGS) expressed a desire to trace their lineages for that purpose. The first member to prove her Revolutionary War ancestry was Elvera “Billi” Johnson. Because there was not yet a chapter in Sedgwick County, she became an active member in Nebraska’s Ash Hollow Chapter NSDAR where she became Chapter Regent. On August 23, 1999, several SCGS members attended a lineage workshop in Ogallala sponsored by Ash Hollow Chapter NSDAR. Later, on May 16, 2000, Betty Jo Reeves, the Organizing Secretary for Colorado State Society NSDAR 1999-2001, and her lineage team traveled to Julesburg to conduct a workshop for prospective members. Three possible names for the new chapter were submitted: Fort Sedgwick, South Platte Valley, and Colorado Gateway. The name preferred by the chapter – Fort Sedgwick – was approved December 6, 2001. The organizational meeting was held August 25, 2002, with sixteen organizing members. Marcella Myers, 2001-2003 Colorado State Society Organizing Secretary, attended the meeting and presented the chapter with an NSDAR insignia pin to be passed down to each Chapter Regent. This pin had originally belonged to Gail Jewell McMahan, a member of the former La Platte Valley Chapter in Julesburg. Click here to see the list of Organizing Members.
