The Linn Grove Cemetery (Section 10 Township 5 Range 65) was established June 3,1874 to replace the original Greeley Cemetery. The cemetery ground of 40 acres owned by J. (Joseph) C. Shattuck was purchased for the sum of 500 dollars on April 22, 1874. (Greeley Tribune March 18, 1874). J.D. Buckley was engaged to survey and lay out 10 acres of the cemetery grounds for the purpose of opening lots to be purchased by the public.  May 13, 1874.  “Notice to hereby given that lots in the new Cemetery are now open for selection and purchase, at from %5.00 to $20.00 each, according to location – L. Von Gohren, Town Clerk.”  In a manuscript written by Alberta Iliff Shattuck (19830, there is mention that Joseph C. Shattuck owned a farm in Linn Creek, Missouri that was named “Linn Grove”.  When he came to the Greeley area he gave the same name to his newly purchased land (June 1872), and when the town bought this land (or portion of it), they decided to keep the name for the cemetery.

The first recorded burial in Linn Grove was for Newell Ives, who died June 3, 1874.  He does not have a traditional tombstone but grave is marked with a flat concrete marker engraved with his name and date of death.  “The Greeley Tribune” gave the following information: “Died in his 39^th year, Newell Ives, formerly of Belmont, New York.” June 3, 1874.  “On motion of Trustee S.K. Thompson it was ordered, that the new Cemetery be known under the name of Linn Grove Cemetery, and that  Morris Hastings be, and is hereby appointed Superintendent and Sexton of the same.:  It was also ordered that the Sexton not charge more than $3.00 for digging a grave.

In 1882.  Most of the remains from the original cemetery were re-interred in Linn Grove. The cemetery is about a mile east of Highway 85 Bypass.  It can be reached by taking either 16^th Street or 18^th Street east off the Bypass until you reach Cedar Avenue. Turn onto Cedar and this will bring you to the main entrance gate.  The Office building is on the grounds and open Monday through Friday from 7:30 until 4:00.  The grounds are open seven days a week.  Mailing address is:  Linn Grove Cemetery, Cedar Avenue, Greeley, Colorado, 80631.
